Chris Auchinvole, Member of Parliament for West Coast Tasman, launched a competition today to find his 2010 Youth Parliament Representative. Youth Parliament will be held on 6 and 7 July 2010. “Kayla Woods, our 2007 Youth MP, did an excellent job and thoroughly engaged with her fellow Youth MPs during her time in Parliament. I welcome entries from anyone who has the drive and determination to represent youth on the big issues” says Chris Auchinvole. The competition requires candidates, aged 16-18, to summit an essay, audio or videoed speech on the topic: ‘My maiden speech to the House of Representatives’. “I am accepting entries until Friday March 19th, and will announce my representative on Wednesday April 7th” says Chris. Every three years New Zealand’s Youth Parliament is held. Young people are selected by Members of Parliament to take part in debates in the Chamber and hold their own select committee meetings. While the young people are at Parliament they will see first hand how our system of representative democracy works. The youth Members of Parliament will debate a Youth Parliament Bill during the legislative debate in the Chamber. Select committees will conduct inquiries about issues that affect youth in New Zealand. “Entries close in three weeks, so I encourage candidates to act. Further information and entry forms are available on my website www.auchinvole.com or from my electorate office” says Chris Auchinvole. At the same time, a Youth Press Gallery will work alongside their Parliamentary Press Gallery mentors and report on Youth Parliament 2010. This is open to people up to the age of 24. Young people who want to suggest a topic for debate, become a Youth MP or join the Youth Press Gallery can find more information on the Youth Parliament website www.youthparliament.govt.nz |
